I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with you, Justin.

The manuals for our cars were written when tire technology was much different, and they presume you're driving on the tires that came with the car. Nowadays people are putting bigger wheels with low profile tires on their cars, and the inflation pressures are higher. Sidewall construction and tire materials have changed over the years, and many high performance tires require higher pressures.

It's true that the number on the tire is the maximum cold inflation pressure, and generally, you don't run them that high. The tires that originally came on my '87 Saab had a max pressure rating of 36 psi, and the car's manual recommended pressures from 32 to 35, depending on load and whether they were on the front or the rear. I'm now running 16" wheels with directional 50 series tires that have a 45 psi max pressure rating, and I run them at just over 40 psi, slightly higher for the rear than front.

John, what I strongly recommend you do is talk to the tire specialists who are familiar with that tire. See what they recommend. Probably, they'll say you should run your Cobras at a pressure somewhat higher than the car manual says. Watch the tires over the next few months for wear, and if you see them wearing too much in the middle, they're overinflated. If they wear more on the outer edges, they may be underinflated. Running tires at lower than their ideal pressure is bad -- the sidewalls flex too much and the tire heats itself more, leading to premature wear and the potential for a high-speed failure (blowout). Ask at the place you bought the tires and see what they say about the proper inflation.
