Next time it's in the shop, have the tech determine what it is, analyze it if need be (cheap, few days). If you've no probs now, stick with what you have - if it's factory it's either 10w30 or gear lube, both were used on and off over the years and there is strong circumstantial, if not too scientific, evidence to suggest not switching from gear lube to 10w30 or else ka-blooey.
If the trans synchros are flaky, you might consider Redline (after first re-trying with fresh fluid of the type you have now). Pro: it's formulated to give synchros a little bite (some voodoo, I dunno) - it has indeed given my 1st and 2nd gears new life. Con: Controversial long-term reliability in these trannies; again, no scientific data. Kevin K (below) likes a similarly oriented product by Honda that is half the price. That's my conservative opinion.
