As you may have gathered from the other posts, you don't push the pistons in on the front brakes. The piston needs to be 'screwed' in by rotating the face. This is true ONLY of the front brakes, and only on 900 brakes UP through 1987.
On the face of the piston you'll see some small holes. Those are the holes the special tool fits into. They give you the grip to turn the piston. Now, there are a bunch of ways to do this. First, buy the tool from the dealer. Second, a bicycle bottom bracket tool works just fine - it's just a V shaped piece of thick wire, and at the end there is a 90 degree turn to a pin. The pins fit into the holes, and you can use the tool to turn the piston. Snap ring pliers also work.
I made a tool from a piece of scrap aluminum and two 6-32 screws. As I remember, it was about 4 to 5 inches long, maybe 1/2 inch wide, of 1/8 or so aluminum. Any metal will do. At one end, drill two small holes, about the distance apart of the holes in the piston face. I made the hole near the end a little oblong. Stick the screw through,, and put a nut on the otherside. With one hole oblong, you can futz with the spacing to get it right. Now set the screws into the holes, and use the shaft to turn the piston 1/4 turn. Reset the screws, and away you go.
Good luck!
