the head gasket went just after I had done MAJOR work to the car (tranny rebuild, suspension bushings, timing chain tensioner, harmonic balancer, engine seals, belts, hoses, etc...) and then installed an aftermarket APC.
The gas mileage took a big hit while I was monkeying around with the new APC (big increase in turbo boost), but it wasn't until the spark plug fouled that there was any change in driveability (maybe 4000 miles after major work.) At that point, I only drove the car straight to the shop.
While your engine is idling, pull out your dipstick and check the air pressure around the end of the dipstick tube. I had little puffs of smoke shooting out like a little locomotive.
