Random 'catch/thunk' in steering

The car is a 1987 T900 Convertible with 134,xxx miles. The concern is that occasionally when I turn the steering wheel, like pulling out of a parking spot, there is a noticible 'thunk' that I can feel through the steering wheel. The sound/feel is much like there is something slightly loose and it slides to a hard stop against something solid. It is not repeatable and is very random. I haven't even been able to determine if it happens as the steering wheel is turned, as it starts to turn or as it finishes a turn. I haven't noticed the problem while driving. I've been under the car and due to past oil leaks and the accumulated gunk anything loose would manifest itself with broken/cracked crud - nothing shows up. I've been over all accessible nuts and bolts and nothing was loose. The steering rack is tight (I grabbed with both hands and pushed and pulled in every direction), the power-steering fluid is OK, the ball joints and tie rod ends are fine. Could there be something in the steering column linkage that could cause this? I suggest this since I have been messing with the wiring to the Air Distribution switch (hey, it works properly now - woohoo!) and I might have inadvertantly moved something that now interfers with the column - any clues would be appreciated.
