It is not the dashboard crumbling. Look closely into the vents. You will see a vertical louver that either allows the air through or closes it off completely depending upon the position of the knob (has the white hash marks on it). The vertical louver has a foam damper surrounding it, this provides a tighter seal when the louver is closed. Mine did the same thing. I popped out the horizontal vents, picked off as much of the foam as possible and sucked it out with a vaccuum.
My vents still close tightly and there is no annoyuing foam blowing out at me or getting clogged in the vents.
