I'm not saying the pinion bearing housing is failing, but the trans locking up is a good indication. You need to pull the back cover of the trans to verify. Go to Jeff and Royce's Saab Extravaganza Site. They have good pictures of a tranny rebuild that shows what the housing looks like. Notorious on 85 and 86 models. It's not your fault, but a poor design. The newer housings have more meat. I just bought an 86 w/ 95k and I'm hoping with some easy driving it will last a lifetime. No guarantees. My '74 99 EMS didn't have a housing failure, but the 4 bolts backed out and could have caused a problem. The worst thing you can do is beat on these cars over 100k. I'm older now and don't want to spend any unnecessary money on tranny or engine rebuilds. When I was younger I beat the Sh*t out of Saabs to see what they were made of. I found out what breaks when you abuse them. The other guys are right when they say $1200 to $2400 for a rebuild. Heed their words.
