Either manual or auto trannys are Saab's Achilles Heel. However, most people, of all makes, tend to neglect their automatic. I don't. I do replace 1/2 of the tranny fluid annually (4 quarts). Although I have a turbo, it is not abused and doesn't go past 3500 rpm...it's not a rocket. I would have preferred a manual but a concession was made to the other half. A manual does exercise the turbo more though - getting the revs up you know. Therefore, you could infer that an automatic preserves the life of a turbo. Lastly, my independent Saab shop feels that the automatics are stronger than the manuals given equal and proper care and maintenance.
