Nice, and no Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 6 Sep 2001 16:24:58 In Reply to: Really stupid newbie question...., Amir Kamal, Thu, 6 Sep 2001 06:05:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Direct Ignition (DI) system replaces the distributor. Instead of one spark coil, with a distributor directing the spark through wires to each plug, in the DI, each spark plug has a coil mounted directly on top. It's easy to tell if your car has it - if there is a distributor cap and wires, you don't have DI.
The DI is a very nice system - it uses the spark plug as a sensor in each cylinder, and can adjust the timing individually for each cylinder. It also has some nice anti-fouling features.
Yes, the DI is expensive to repair - a new DI cassette is about $300, and they are known to fail. Then again, ever price a distributor?
And no, your car doesn't have it. None of the 'classic' 900 series had DI.
