Annoying heating problem

Well I decided to test my heater the other day. Winters in Pa are notoriously bad....much to my chagrin nothing. Well first thing I do is I buy a thermo., cause hey it can't hurt. Replace it, everything goes smooth. Still nothing.....I'm ready to post on the board to see what it is when I see the post about connecting the arm to the heat selector knob...I do it, and lo and behold it wasn't connected........but still no heat.
My questions are this 1. I did a search on Heater Control Valves, and I don't have any symptoms...sticky temp. selectory or leaking coolant, but could it be the Heater Control Valve?
2. Is it possible that the thermo. I bought (which I impatiently bought at a foreign shop, don't know if OEM, it's made in France if that helps lol) is now my culpit.....that I would have heat if I didnt' replace the Thermo. and just connected the arm?
3. Is it maybe the heater core?
4. Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated...winter is in the air
