You should lose some, but not significant, amounts of power with the a/c on.
Your father's car is probably running better than yours because it has had more recent maintenance. To get boost right up to the red, tune it:
New Bosch cap/rotor, NGK plugs, Bougicord wires, Bosch fuel filter, air filter. Consensus on this board is generally that these brand names for these parts shouldn't be substituted with other brands (There are Saabnet sponsors who sell tune-up kits that essentially contain what I list, and probably an oil filter, too). Adjust timing, too. Also adjust the wastegate. There is a FAQ on this. Mine was quite far out of adjustment - bringing it back into spec. did wonders.
If the car has had this regular maintenance recently, then you probably have a vacuum leak, which is very common for turbos: check all the black rubber vac. lines, as well as the rubber plumbing pieces for the turbo. If you haven't done this before, search this board for "vacuum leaks", etc. There is also a FAQ on Saabnet about this. Better yet, replace all the vacuum lines under the hood, as they are now brittle and susceptible to cracking after having been subjected to lots of heat for the past 12 years. Size 3.5mm I.D. hose.
