The first thing to do is get a scraper to remove the heavy build-up. The Gunk works better on lighter accumulations. Spray the engine when it's at operating temperature. Take the car to the car wash and use their high pressure hose. Be sure to leave the engine running when doing so. Try not to direct the spray at any electrical stuff. I don't believe the stuff will interfere with the altenator. People do this all the time without any problems. If you have a gusher it shouldn't be that hard to locate the leak. Some repairs might require engine removal. As far as oil, I can't think of anything that would minimize the leaks.
