Clack-clack and arm reach

Hi, All: I have three questions/problems.
1) My car ('88 900T AT) idles fine, but when I put in reverse to back out of the garage, for example, there are loud clack-clack and what sounds like sympathetic vibrations (from some heat shield?) coming from the engine compartment (maybe the top of the engine?) This is especially noticeable in the morning. But they go away when the car is in neutral or park, so I cannot identify the noise by myself. What do you think causes the noices?
2) Is there some way to adjust the steering column or wheel so that the wheel is not so far from the seat? I have the car seat set such that I can easily reach the foot pedals and the gear shift column. But I find that my arms are stretched uncomfortably, when my hands are at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions. Makes me feel like I am driving a bus! Any way to tilt the steering wheel or move it closer to the seat?
3) How does one lower the backs of the rear seat? I can remove the seat by pulling on the canvas strap, but then how to lower the back for a flat cargo space? The two angular wings at the left and right sides of the back must have something to do with it, but I cannot lift, pull or move them at all. What are those wings for, anyway?
Thanks for advice.
