1) Drain coolant at the radiator pet-cock(use two wrenches or you might be pulling the radiator ti get the pet-cock re-soldered. Ask me how I know.) You might even have a drain on the engine block. I don't know for sure.
2) Flush the system with clean water.
3)Fill the system with clean water containing the prestone flush. Follow manufacturer's directions for use.
4) Run the engine warm to start all the coolant circulating
5) Stop the engine and wait a few minutes before draing off coolant
6) Flush the system again with clean water; this time, flush the engine and radiator seperately and in the reverse direction to normal coolant circulation. The engine jacket should thus be flushed from the cylinder head down, and the radiator from the left connecting pipe. Remove the thermostat first.
7) Flush out the heater core, likewise, in the reverse direction of normal flow.
8) Check the operation of the cock in the line to the heater core.
9) Fit the thermostat, water outlet pipe and hoses and check the system for leakage. When cleaning the cooling system, check also that the radiator overflow pipe is not blocked by dirt.
10)When refilling system with new coolant (50/50 mix of coolant and pure water-capacity 10.5 quarts) open the bleeder nipple on thermostat housing until coolant escapes through the nipple.
11) Start the engine and run till it is warm. Let it run at moderate speed and with the heater controls set to maximum heating. Continue topping off until all the is expelled from the system.
12) Test coolant. It should be good to at least -15F. Add more coolant to get the temperature lowered if too high.
