Yep - more boost does not always mean more power. I run a red box APC and a couple of extra degrees of retard via the stop tab - I get 1/4 in the red on 95 ron with no boost back off - just good solid power biuld. If I dial in more boost via the APC or the wastegate I get a higher peak surge but end up not actualy going so fast as the boost is being knocked back all the time.
The problem with the retard action on the distributor is that it does not progressively increase retard as boost increases but it just dumps the whole lot in at a certain point. Aparently the vacuum capsule from the LPT cars has a progressive retard - the only other way is MSD.
