What's wrong with rebuilding them? Are you afraid? Posted by DougM [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Actually, for brakes I found the Bentley to be inferior>, ChipJ, Thu, 13 Sep 2001 12:18:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've rebuilt them for years. The biggest headache that could happen is the pistons might be rusted and they are costly to buy. Years ago you could get original equipment Lucas/Girling kits that had everything including the special grease that is compatible with brake fluid. They even came with detailed instructions. I'm fortunate enough to still have a kit and will be rebuilding my fronts very soon. 86T
If the rebuilder said he wouldn't rebuild a 17 year old caliper, then these calipers would become extinct and very expensive to replace.
If the kits aren't available anymore, then it makes no sense to try and rebuild ones without new seals and boots.
Having the right tools (ie. sandblaster, flex hone, vise) are critical. Not everyone is fortunate like I am to have everything available to me. Over $20K worth of tools and four years of professional experience working on SAABs. I am a firm believer that if you own a SAAB you better know how to work on them or pay the price at the dealer or indie in your neighborhood. I'm cheap and have some knowledge (don't ask about electrical or auto trans) and have been faithful to SAAB for 17 years and counting. I will probably drive them till I die. The classic 900's are the best, but I'll never give up on my '74 EMS.

86T 3dr-just bought a couple weeks ago for $800-they told the kid it needed a $1000 brake job-he sold it-I put a pad in and the brakes are fine-calipers are original and they will be rebuilt and dependable and they won't cost a dime.
