Automotive paint is designed to be sprayed and it's expensive. If you try to brush it, you'll be wasting your time and money and will wind up with a crappy looking job that probably won't last long.
If you're not too picky with how it looks, consider going to Maaco or Earl Scheib. They can usually squirt some paint on for a few hundred dollars. But remember, you get what you pay for and for a few hundred dollars, you're not going to get much.
If you're doing a relatively small area (door, hatch, etc.) you can usually have a paint supplier load up some paint in spray cans that do an OK job.
