Yup, it's true. When the substrate in the cat gets loose, it gets shot down the pipe and lodges in the muffler. The solution here is to get a truly freeflow muffler that you can see from one side through to the other. Then there's nothing to trap the substrate!
How do I know? Welp, one night when pushing my 9000 a little harder than normal, the heater core supply hose developed a pinhole leak, and shot coolant right into the distributor. As you might imagine the car quickly stalled, but there was still fuel in the cylinders than hadn't been combusted yet. It went down the exhaust pipe and backfired or lit up in the cat, causing a small explosion down there. Looking out the rear-view mirror there was a shower of sparks and hot substrate all over the road - the 3" Magnaflow muffer didn't stop any of it. When I pulled the cat out a week later, it was completely hollow. Nice!
