Plenty of play in clutch pedal. Normal ??

Have a 89 900T16 with 158K. Just the other day a noticed that the clutch pedal had about 3/4 of an inch of play before it started to feel firm. Have had the car for a few months and had not noticed till now, it's almost as if it's a recent sudden change but...
Looked at the linkage and found that the it is so worn (oval holes) the play is coming from where the pedal and the hydraulic linkage join. Soft travel is purely the return spring on it's own.
This kind of wear did not happen overnight so am I dreaming? or is there a possibility that the piston has stopped returning as far as it used to and is not taking out the slack?
Can I adjust or replace just the worn bit? The master cylinder seems fine.
Many thanks
Peat
