I didn't remove the pulley mounted on the harmonic balancer (my mistake) and actually managed to remove the big bolt. Imagine how easy
it would have been otherwise.
Remove the 10mm bolts mounting the brass colored pulley to the HB.
Towsend says you should use the starter with a breaker bar for the 10mm bolts. I crawled under the car with a 3/8 drive ground down
10mm socket and managed to open them. I was surprised how easily they broke open.
You should then reach from the passenger side from above with left hand finger tips to pull them out. I cranked the starter to rotate the
undone bolts until they favored the passenger side. As far as the big bolt, grind down a 1/2" drive 27mm craftsman socket (about $6) to
1/2 inches. Sneak in the rachet+socket (make sure its on open setting) through the bottom, side of the pulley sideways and mount it on the
big bolt. You should be standing on the passanger side of the car and working from above. Place some rage underneath the pulley b4
trying to mount the bolt. This is because when the rachet+socket falls, it becomes lodged in the array of rods and tubes down there. Let
the ratchet stand as vertically as possible while a friend hand you a breaker bar. I took a hardwood floor plank (2.5" by .75" and 2feet
long) and placed it against the frame lip above the air intake of the condenser by the firewall. Make sure it rests against the frame lip and
misses anything that is plastic. Next , place the breaker bar flat against the plank ( you can move the bar because it racheting to the
passenger side direction).
Get in the car and crank and turn off the key real quickly. Some people like to slam the bar against the compressor , but I don't
think slamming is necessary at all. Mine opened on the first try by resting it against the hardwood.
Over the weekend I shall do the oil pump rings and will post more.
