I just had my '87 900 apart, to replace the slave cylinder. You have it about right: you have to hold everything together while "slipping" it in place. First, clean any thick gunk from the metal under the Flywheel, so when your Clutch Disk falls down, you don't get grease around the edge of your pad surfaces. It helps to remove the spark plugs so you can spin the flywheel easier. You have to have the Spacer-Ring in place to keep the Pressure-Plate compressed. My worst problem was the Spacer-Ring not compressing enough to get things apart. I had to bend all the tabs in on the Pressure-Plate Housing. If you need a way to compress the Presure-Plate and don't have the special Saab tool; I did it by temporarily bolting the Clutch-Disk and Pressure-Plate in place with some 1/4" spacer pads (cut as arcs from some wood paneling scraps). The spacers force the Pressure-Plate disk to pull the Bearing-Fingers in, and you can easily put a ring of 3/16" solid wire in place. (Some manuals say an old spark-plug wire will work, but that's too squishy.) Then you remove the parts and spacers, and slip all the real parts in place. I found it went in better by inserting everything from the right (exhaust) side, and I had to do a little prying to get the Pressure-Plate on the pins. You have to keep the Slave Cylinder pressed against the Pressure-Plate as you go. Don't forget to reinsert the shaft to center the Clutch disk before you tighten things up. It will go together fairly easily. Good luck.
