tranny problem update

hey guys, I just had a mechanic drain the transmission fluid and check the drain plug. Apparently, there is only the usual amount of metal shavings, no metal bits or anything. He also took the car out for a spin and said that he could neither hear nor feel anything wrong with the tranny. Apparently the whine that I hear is not loud enough to suggest pinion bearing failure. So, is it safe to assume that my tranny and pinion bearing are still in ok shape? Or do I still need to, as Doug M suggested, remove the cover for the tranny housing in order to actually inspect the bearing? thanks.
