If you get a grind or clunk going into reverse, either the clutch isn't disengaging all the way, or the clutch shaft bearing is shot.
Failure to disengage all the way is often the result of an elongated hole in the clutch pedal where it attaches to the master cylinder. The fix is to bush, weld & redrill, or replace. The master cylinder could also be weak.
If the clutch shaft bearing is bad, the engine will continue to turn the gears in the transmission even if the clutch is disengaged. The bearing costs $5, but you've got to pull the clutch to replace it. Fortunately, that's a reasonable DIY job.
