Encountered the same thing... Lower drivers side ball joint had one bolt that WOULD NOT come out. Finally removed the lower a-arm and found a shop. Paid the guy there $10 to do it. t was well worth it. LOTS of heat and pounding and it came out. I'm glad I paid him... My propane wasn't getting it hot enough.
I finally bought the JC whitney ball joint/tie rod end puller tool. That was well worth the money. I recommend it over the pickle fork (which the bentely recommends against).
Too bad it just started raining, I was about 2 hours away from finishing the reinstallation of everything on the passengers side.
