Working on my shadetree DIY "major service" this weekend I thought I would change the plugs and the oil. Borrowed a 3/8" extension for my rachet and torque wrench and off I went on the plugs. Little tune-up grease on the tips after torque down and now I'm in business. No sweat, take a break, let the wife know we're still on track for antique shopping later in the afternoon.

Oil change time... 1st time for me on this car (bought her 3000 miles ago). I have my Castrol 10W30 GTX, new drain plug, new filter, new washer... I get my trusty 13mm box wrench and give it a tug. Nothing. I get the 2' helper pipe, but the plug couldn't be convinced. It started slipping and I stripped off 2 corners of the hex pattern. I was pissed off and got out the vice grips. 1 or 2 tugs and then I remembered an important thing: The best tool I have is my brain. I had to let a cooler head prevail and walk away. Luckily there is this BB and I'm not the first person who had Biff Armstrong, the lube shop gorilla, as the last oil change guy.

I read the pipe wrench around the outer lip of the nut thing and thought I'd give that a try. Well next day I had located the pipe wrench, and after a few minutes, no problem. Oil plug 0, Randy & the pipe wrench 1.

The advise on here on torquing the plug is right-on, too. I set my wrench for 30 NM (near the low end of the specified range, i think) and put the new plug in. 30 NM is hardly anything!

Whoever wrote Bently is a joker. They say put a rag under the filter to catch the oil. Try a *box* of rags. My left front around the lower inside wheel well won't ever rust with the nice coat of oil I dropped! It would appear I'm not the first!

Time to wash her and go for a spin!

Keep saabin'!
