As far as a cleaning - try any good solvent like acetone, or a paint thinner, or mineral spirits. Even an alcohol solution would work. Just pour a goodly amount in there and slosh it around, let it settle, slosh some more. Flush and repeat a few times and watch the solution become clearer. And that's pretty much it.
Difference between alum and plastic? Probably just weight.
