normal. ticking is from lifters pumping up with oil. nothing to worry about unless it doesn't go away when warm. could be a lazy lifter or poor oil circulation (some say your oil filter can affect startup clatter/oil supply). what year, engine? with later engines (with internal oil feed passages - +88 I think) can sometimes trap air - esp. after head work - and can be bled thru a head bolt. pre 88 had an exterior oil feed rail with parts that could become brittle with age. i can't recall exactly but I think all? 900 16v have self adjusting lifters. my previous '90 900 would clatter a bit, especially when it's cold out, but it always went away. my current '90 SPG obscures any tappet noise with its rattling timing chain!
