2 Questions: Speedometer and Instrument Panel Lamps

My odometer wasn't moving and the speedometer was squealing. (It was rather bothersome - like having a dozen locusts in my car.) I removed the instrument panel and fished out the speedometer. The odometer gears were sticking or jammed. I pushed the odometer gears ahead, managing to put ten miles on while I sat there. The back of the speedometer turned much more easily and the squealing went away. I reassembled everything. Now the squealing is starting to come back suggesting things will jam again soon. What can I do? The point where the speedometer drives the odometer gears appeared to be well-greased and all the gears I could see appeared to be in excellent condition. Is there something else I should lubricate or is there an adjustment I can make?
Also, after reassembling everything my instrument panel lamps don't illuminate. The bulbs are fine (but I changed them and they still don't shine) and turning the rheostat doesn't help. Instrument panel illumination has always been a come-and-go thing, but in the past all I've had to do is wiggle the bulbs or replace them and the world is perfect again. Now, nothing seems to help (and everything else in the instrument panel is working fine). Any suggestions? Did I forget to connect something to the back of the instrument panel?
Many many thanks,
Chris Guyer
1987 900 (this speedometer is not the original and only has 20,000 miles on it, which seems a little early for something to go wrong)
