I am in the middle of replacing the oil pump cover gasket and crank seal. I am inspecting the gears and am wondering how much grooving is acceptable? The smaller gear's face is grooved on the side that fits towards the block. The aluminium pump cover is also scored where the small gear fits into it on the far side from the crescent deal. do you follow me? i am confusing myself. So my question is how much scoring is acceptable? If it is not a machined smooth surface does it need to be replaced?
The other question, the punch mark on the outer gear. The Bentley shows it the opposite way as how i took it out. From reading townsend's site my understanding of his info is opposite of Bentley's also. Are you supposed to see the punch mark on the outer gear when it installed in the cover?
And I guess most importantly, what would cause the scoring? Is the HB bad?
And a random question, what would make oil turn grey? I cleaned the pressure relief valve and and the oil was kind of grey.
thanks for any help
