this is probably a real stupid question...but why not just fix the pinion bearing housing? or is that what happens in a rebuild?
Dumb question #2...why is it so !@#$%^ expensive to rebuild a tranny? is it just labor intensive? parts? both? 1500$ is more than I paid for the freakin' car.
And the dumbest question of all...if it needs a rebuild, what are the odds that it could be done by me - given that I've never worked on Saabs at all in my entire life, or cars for that matter...i'm a laser engineer with mechanical aptitude limited to simple linear stages, rotary stages, servo - motors etc just for laser applications - no cars. Is there a tutorial or video or something that could be helpful? or am I dreaming. I suspect I'm dreaming - the way people talk about this task, it's as if it's more of a job than watching an ant eat a bale of hay.
Hell, for 1500 I could take a quarter long coarse at Stanford and learn how to do it - but I've never seen that offering on the schedule! Ha ha! Of course, I'm kidding - but seriously, that's an insane repair bill.
