Today was a garage day for me and the Saaber. With the generous help of many on this board which I am very greatful, along with a dog-eared maintenance manual, and a six pack of cold beer, I was able to track down the cause of two problems with my car.

Originally, I lost 1,2 and R gear. And then my ignition key started spinning and the car would not start. Two seperate problems but linked to the shifter assy.

Once I got those blasted tri-star nuts off, (whoever designed those should be strung up by their armpit hair) taking the shifter assy apart was relatively easy. I also had to remove the heater duct which proved to be fairly difficult. Two screws on top right under the knee bolster and then lots of pulling and tugging. Once that thing was out, I could see that the problem was forward of the firewall. Jacked up the car and just aft of the tranny I noted a torn bushing as well as a ripped boot going into the tranny. Easy fix as soon as the parts arrive.

Now the ignition cylinder/tumbler, (the part the key goes into) wound up being pretty tricky. You gotta locate that dowel at the 7 o'clock position and give is a couple of preety good whacks with a hammer and a punch and drive it all the way in. This pushes on a spring loaded button on the cylinder/tumbler and once the button is pushed in, out comes the cylinder. I was initially reluctant to whack too hard, but WHACK is what is needed.

Problem - I found that the cylinder slips onto a piece of metal about the same width and relative size of the end of a flat head screwdriver. Its made of pot metal. I have the entire assy out of the vehicle and will be taking it to a locksmith or Saab mech to see of it can be repaired.

AGAIN, THANKS EVRYONE!!!! This was fun and gave me a good excuse to tinker and drink beer. Also saved me a huge mechanic bill which will pad my beer budget for many months!!!

Regards, Tom
