how long? well this can vary from 60k miles to 300k miles. depending on how you shift and how well it was assembled in the factory (tolerances, preload on bearings, ...).
so, do the oil change. it's really simple, no probs, just time consuming. stick to Justins instructions , but flush twice and (for the final operation) use Loctite on every bolt!!!!!!
I use synthetic 75W90 and shifting is really smooth, no experiences with motor oil, don't know what was in it before.
viscosity: 75W90 is probably same as 10W40!!
why: because the viscosity of engine and gear oil only got different "names" to make it easier to identify, altough the viscosity is the same, see link http://www.castrol.de/schmierstoffe/3_viskositaeten/viskositaeten_5.html (yes, german language, but there is a good chart!)
and 75W90 stays thicker in high heat to protect your bearings!!
and it's thinner in the cold to ease shifting!! all compared to 10W30 or 10W40.
so it is up to you, but I think it's worth it.
cheers, uwe k
