Check for any current leaks at front main crankshaft seal(at firewall) and rear mainseal from flywheel inspection hole. If so, go ahead with synth, but fix the leaks. If you have manual trans, put in a new clutch when you do the rear main seal. Front crank seal requires removing crank pulley and since the leaks probably have started to rot the rubber doughnut on this pulley, it should be replaced as well. Also, the oil pump seal. A diy'er, armed with a Bentley manual, and a few searches on this bulletin board can do the whole job over the weekend +/-$300 for the parts, saving $500-$600 in labor.
If no leaks now, I'd stay with regular organic oil (not mineral oil??? this is a car not a butcher block cutting top), unless you want to do the seal replacements or need a clutch anyway. The leaks from the synth will probably be minor(not gushers), but will be annoying and will attack the harmonic balancer/crank pulley doughnut.
