I also have an 86 900s (5m) and the thermostat works. Fan kicks on when temp gauge is at 2/3 or maybe 3/4 way up, not yet into the red zone. It always stops, kicks on briefly & cools down, but not much. It never really cools back down to 1/2 way or below until I resume highway driving & have the wind in my favor. In the city this scares me. I know it's technically not overheating, but the tendency to run hot is definately there.
Q: Should this scare me?
Q: Is there a thermostat avail that breaks at a lower temp?
Q: Can the fan be "tweaked" to run for a longer duration?
Now- I don't want to ice my engine here, I just startle seeing my temp gauge SO CLOSE to the red zone, even though it always backs off. I don't mean to sound too anal or even foolish here, it just seems like it could stand to run a bit cooler... & pose less jeapordy to motor damage.
I HAVE TO KEEP THIS OLD CAR VIGOROUS! Any advice is appreciated- thanks!!!
Erin
