When you turn the heat knob in the center of the dash you are turning a shaft that attaches to the valve that is above your right foot. This is a sliding plate valve that opens to allow water flow to the heater core. If you look under the hood you will see two water lines that run into the firewall below the drivers wiper, each has a clamp attaching it to the two lines of the heater valve. The valve attaches to a manifold plate with the inlet and outlet to the heat core. this joint has two 'o'ring seals and six screws that clamp the joint together. If you remove the speaker plate on the drivers side of the dash you can look down thru the windshield with a light and see the valve. It is a simple remove and replace job, BUT access is lousy and its a real pain in the *** job. If you have lots of patience and small hands it will probably take 4-5 hours to do it the first time. If you attempt to do it get a 'ball' end allen wrench for the screws at the joint. Check for proceedures for getting access to the valve before you start. It involves removing the console and knee pad for access up from below. I usually remove the drivers seat also so I can place padding to lie on while my head and arms are up into the dash from below.
