Well I am guessing that RS is right in saying that your brushes are worn. A car with high miles would likely give enough wear on the brushes that they could need replaces. Give that a try Micah if your problems prosist.
Here is some info off a web site.
One sign you might need new alternator brushes/voltage regulator is when your headlights run dim and the engine starts slowly, etc. This usually happens after about 100k-140k miles. Of course, you should check the condition of the battery, etc. The brushes...for a 1985 VW rabbit work perfectly in my 85-87 Saabs...I have used this in three of our Saabs ('85-'87 900t) with no problems. I bought it at Bap-Geon foreign auto parts store. Any foreign parts store should have it.
