the pump motor is the same and you can use it, but the 89 900 and actually some early 90 900's came with an integral supply line check valve. Probably, the 9000 pump does not have the check valve, so you will have to replace the plastic supply elbow that plugs into the top with the elbow that incorporates the check valve.
It is a pain to force the elbow into the line. You need a special tool vise/clamp to hold the fuel line while you push the elbow nipple into the line. The clamp that comes with a flaring tool kit works. Or, you can go to plan B and use a short piece of fuel hose to jump between the new elbow and the fuel supply line. Cut the old elbow right at the end of the fuel line to leave the old nipple inside the line. this will give you a rigid support for a hose clamp around the jumper. I hope I explained that OK?
