90 shifter rebuild? White plastic "ball" parts worn?

Been having trouble getting the reverse lights to burn on my 90S. Inspecting the inards of the shifter, the metal dowel aft of the shifter
ball engagement ring, which has a nice flat machined on it to depress the backup light switch, now has a nice groove worn into it such that the switch will no longer depress. Short of total disassembly& welding onto this flat, I have attempted patch with Metal Epoxy into the worn spot and hopefully it will work.
While shifter out (from the top only via Torx screws) I cleaned all the white plastic parts and relubricated them. Nothing appears broken here, but once reassembled & tested it still seems very sloppy. Especially when into reverse there is a good bit of left to right wobble of the shifter which makes a large difference in position of the metal pin which makes the backup light switch.
Are these white ball parts just worn out? Car only has about 140K miles, but it seems to me these parts should be much tighter fitting once assembled?
Please advise shifter experiences & how much slop you notice.
Also FWIW my 87T seems much tighter & less sloppy, also almost feels like a shorter throw to shift?
TIA
