First things to look at are the normal tune-up things: spark plug gap, cap, rotor, spark plug wires.

But, the thing that is probably what's up with your car missing when you hit passing gear is in 2 parts:
1. Cracked hall effect connector on the side of the distributor. Same thing happend on my '88 SPG. When I really nailed it, the front of the engine raised a bit, shifted the position of the connector, and the engine made a major miss.
2. Bad front engine mount: This makes the front of the engine rise really badly when you put a lot of power on. Try this test - with the hood open, put it in drive with the brakes on and give it a little gas. If the front of the engine rises more than 3/8 of an inch or so, the front mount is probably cooked.

My friend at a dealer told me that they had a guy with an '87 900T that kept having bad distributor caps. They couldn't figure it out. The mech would put one in, test drive it, and it would be OK. The owner would drive it and it would crack. They went through a few caps until the mech figured out that the owner really honked on it ... and had a bad front mount. The front of the engine would rise high enough for the distributor cap to hit the underside of the hood. When they replaced the mount, he never had a cap failure.
