Don't drive the car any further because the next thing that will happen is the transmission will seize and you will not be able to move the car. Check out the advice in the archives that others gave me when I was in the same position as you with the exact same car... I you are thinking about rebuilding it is very important that you do not drive the car b/c there is a chance you can fracture the tranny case when the tranny freezes and wreck the tranny beyond what could be reasonably rebuilt. Your tranny problems are probably centered around the weak pinion bearings of the '88 5-speed tranny. I bought my car from someone who wanted to get rid of it probably b/c they found out that a rebuilt tranny is about $1450.00-1650.00 or more and labor is about $600. I got a replacement tranny from a low mileage wreck and replaced it myself; it took a while (~3 weeks of a few hours each night after work & weekends) but it was "fun"). I probably spent $250.00 on tools (incl. an engine hoist), $100.00 on parts and$400.00 on the used tranny. The tranny is from a '90 900S; this tranny was designed with a stronger pinion bearing and is more reliable. If you can do the work yourself I think it is worth it... I learned alot actually and I am more confident about my cars mechanicals now that I have taken it apart. I also feel as though I cannot be 'taken' by mechanics like I used to be able to...for example: go and have an estimate for the job and ask what they need to do...they will probably make the job sound like it is *very* difficult and if the mechanic is anything like the ones I talked to he will sigh and say "Oh you know this is a really *tough* job b/c you have to pull the engine on those Saabs..." Before I would just nod my head and agree, NOW I know that pulling the engine is pretty easy and takes about 3-hrs. I don't know what some of those mechanics think but I guess it works most of the time...One guy told me he liked working on old/classic/high mileage Saabs b/c he made a LOT of money off of them...Well that is my 0.02 worth of advice...
