I install these things all day long, (I'm a tire tech for Belle Tire), and I run the chrome stems on a lot of cars, never with problems. The ones we use are a standard rubber stem with a chrome sleeve pressed over the rubber portion, with a chrome cap. How old are the valve stems? Just like any other rubber product, with age, exposure to the elements, and constant heat cycling, the rubber eventually will break down. Some cracking is normal, and won't affect the valve stem, tire, or ability to hold pressure. Spray some soapy water solution on the valve stem, will show if its leaking. There is another option to think about-we call them screw in valves, in reality its a full metal chromed stem that is secured in the wheel by a nut. This is a full metal ridged stem. There is one major drawback to these tho-if something hits the stem, unlike a rubber one that will bend away and return, the metal ones will snap right off. Not really an issue on a street car, but something to think about. All tire stores should have this style, it might be referred to as a high pressure type valve stem.
