Greetings All,
I need some help, I'm taking my car in to have it repaired and I don't want to get shafted so I would like some opinions on what could be causing it.
1988 900S 4 door 16V non Turbo 5 speed. 192000 miles.
Symptoms:
Check engine light on.
Engine Starts, will idle only 400 to 500 rpm sometimes.
If engine refuses to start applying slight throttle will help.
Quickly pressing throttle causes engine to stumble sometimes die.
Rough idle up to 1500 smoothing out as RPM increases.
During driving disengaging clutch and throttle so engine can drop back to idle will cause the engine to drop to 40 to 50 RPM and sometimes stall.
I just happened to notice the exhaust is producing a pretty acrid odor at idle.
No smoke visible.

Here's what I'm guessing maybe someone could tell me if I'm on the wrong track.
1. Since the problem happens at both cold and hot conditions, it doesn't seem to be the O2 sensor. It's pretty new anyway.
2. I've checked for possible vacuum leaks, even adding hose clamps to some tubes to be sure. I found none but a couple of tubes were suspect so I replaced them.
3. If the car had a carb I would think it was all carb related. The stumble off idle reminds me of a bad accelerator pump.
4. I'm left thinking the MAS unit is bad. or...
5. The thorttle position sensor.

Any ideas could be helpful, I have not pulled the codes by the way. I figured I would let the "pros" handle that.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Joe
