My '84 bumper cover was painted once upon a time, instead of replaced.
Recently bought a used bumper and swapped covers.

If your car is a 3-door, first remove outer tail lights from inside trunk. Then remove trim plate held on by two small screws. Can't get to them if tail light is in place. When the trim plates are removed you will see two nuts attached to studs protruding from the bumper. That's it.
The large rubber spacer in the middle will fall out when the bumper is pulled away from the body.

The bumper assembly is held together by several screws which can be VERY tight. Use a large phillips bit and be careful not to strip the screwheads. When the screws are removed you will have access to the innards, which are a large metel support and several plastic honeycomb pieces.
