This is not sounding like a fun problem. I'm sorry... :(
The noise you describe does sound like your starter solenoid, but it shouldn't have been affected by what you were doing in the trunk. The first thing I would do, right now, is undo what you did in the trunk and see if things go back to normal. It's *way* too easy to accidentally connect the wrong wire to the wrong place on those rear light clusters and accidentally dump +12v to ground, so start there.
After that, I would consider removing every fuse and relay that you don't need in the car and adding them back in one by one, verifying that things work as they should. On an 8v car, a surprising number of fuses can be removed without affecting the car... :)
Also, stop right now and get that voltmeter (hopefully digital) back home. Playing with electricity without being able to make quantitative checks is a royal PITA and potentially dangerous (moreso to the car than you... ).
