The car is a '87 900i8v. 5 door, looks great, white & lots of chrome. I just bought it for $$700. Has 180,000 miles on it. Tranny is ok for some time ahead, has new PS rack, manual sunroof, aubergine cloth interrior, so I have no complaints about the deal. Now the thing is, it uses up about a fifth of oil every 400 miles or so. I just took the compression and here are my readings (1st/2nd): cylinder 1:140/170 psi. Cylinder 2: 150/170 psi. Cylinder 3:180/170 psi. Cylinder 4: 170/170 psi. Now these look like great readings to me, though frankly the first reading on cylinder 3 looks ridiculous. I use a cheap Hella meter, that's also why I take seconds.
The spark plugs looked very black, a bit sooty and 1 and 2 had oil on the threads.
Other symptons are a clatter which is always there, sounds like a valve clatter to me, is more noticeable at acceleration, then dissolves into a vague ticking at higher revs. More worrysome is that at higher speeds, say over 70 mph, there is noticeable blue smoke behind me. Well, my wife says she can't see it, but I think I can.
Another thing is that the accelaration doesn't run smooth, but a bit hiccuping, I mean going from low to high revs isn't as smooth as I'm used to from my saabs. Also the car seems to lose power if it gets hotter. But it doesn't overheat easily in city traffic, the fan doesn't come on often and never very long. Just yesterday I got caught in a big traffic jam on the autobahn in Germany that was about a half an hour of stop and go. No problem. A bad gasket would cause trouble there, I'd reckon.
Frankly I'm a bit in the dark about the oil usage. Maybe the timing chain going out, causing the valves to open off timing? Oh yes, it also runs a bit on the rough side, but no rougher than my old 99 used to and that engine was okay, 'till I ruined it.
Other thought; maybe the valve stems, or guides? (is that what you call them?) That wouldn't be so bad, I have a good head in my basement. It's from a turbo, but I could swap the camshaft. But what if that's the culprit? I've never heard of that with saabs, but I had a peugeot that went dead over that.
Please, if any of you has any experience or knowledge, let me know.
