NU2ME '88 SPG (175K)-2.2 motor (Feb '88 assembly date)-005 AMM-w/adj "plug".
Is it possible to "pull the engine codes" from this engine with the DIY switch from Swedish Wrench? Seems like the CEL CODE literature is mainly concerned with the 2.4 engines (‘88>) & later. If I pull the codes, will they tell me anything definitive?
Just when I thought the engine was running well (no CE lights for awhile), on my way into work this am, at stoplight, engine coughs, CE (steady-not flashing) light comes on and engine goes into "limp home" mode. I pull over, shut engine off and restart, (after 3 tries), dash light goes out, engine runs fine and I continue into work-engine is running fine. This intermittent CE light problem has never left me stranded but I would like to get to its source. This seems to fit the CEL pattern, intermittent occurrence at a stoplight when engine fully warmed, although I’ve gotten CEL’s on a cold engine startup in the AM. I can "clear" them out usually by just restarting engine.
Work done:
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, AIC cleaned & lubed, base idle and timing set, new fuel & air filters. Throttle plate cleaned, APC knock sensor plug cleaned with tuner cleaner and dialectic grease added. Various vacuum lines replaced along with new intake manifold bushings and nipples. Check valve (from valve cover to intake manifold) added recently.
AMM is less than year old, and OXY sensor seems to be working fine (.05v-.08v output). I did discover one of the connectors in the OXY sensor heater plug was disconnected so I connected it. I previously failed MD Emissions with high Nox but have not retested it since this discovery & fix. Replaced many vacuum lines thought to be suspect. Another (related?) problem; I get “intermittent” boost meaning some days it’s in the yellow, some days in orange. Fixed APC solenoid plug (heat rotted) and car boosted ok for a few days than back to basic boost. I did adjust the APC box for more boost, previously.
Things I thought I’d add to the list, checking the APC connector plug and cleaning off the engine ground areas but other than that I’m stumped. New OXY sensor maybe? New APC solenoid? Do y’all think the boost problem is related to the CEL problem? New Cat is recommended fix for high nox.
