5-spd linkage stretch?

The other day I accidentally dropped the clutch with the car in reverse and the parking brake on. Of course it died, but it appears to have jerked the linkage somehow and now I can't put it in any gears except for second and fourth. I tried to loosen the gear lever housing and adjust it as described in the Haynes manual, but that did not help. I am just holding on to the hope that I won't have to spend thousands on transmission work. Any advice would be much appreciated.
