The basics are 1) check ball joint play. If any is found replace all 4 and align. 2) check for any deteriorated tie rod ends or tie rod end boots. replace any and align. 3) check all a-arm bushings replace any which are deteriorated. 4) replace lower shock bushings (note, do not check, just replace. I have yet to see a car which needed SOME front end work that did not NEED front lower shock bushings.) If the upper shock bushings are missing, that is also a possible klunk site. Unfortunately, you may end up destroying a shock getting them out and 2 new front shocks may also be in the works. usual disclaimers. $0.02, etc.
