Timing Question (kinda long)

Still working on this old 8V NT and have it running pretty well, however, it just dosen't seem to have the power I think it should (turbo guys... bite your toungues haha). A couple weeks ago I pulled all the vac lines off, one at a time, and replaced them. This solved a multitude of sins and it's purring like a kitten- but- somehow still not quite "right". Today I went out to doublecheck the ignition timing before I take it on a short weekend trip. First thing I noticed was there was NO vacuum coming from the line to the distributer. Hmmmmm. Doublechecked the routing and it was connected where the charcoal canister line should be and vise versa. Corrected the routing, pulled the vac line off the dist. and aimed the light. I'll be dammed if I can find the timing mark on the flywheel. No, I didn't turn the engine to TDC YET to try to locate and highlight it, but the flywheel looks pretty clean and I'm just surprised I cant see it with the timing light. Could the timing be THAT FAR off and have the car still run? It's getting 28-30mpg which dosent seem to bad for 203,000mi. There is no spark knock either, just the feeling that something is holding it back when trying to accelerate. Is it POSSIBLE that, like some old 8cyl cars, someone put the distributer in 180deg off and have it still run? Kimo-saabie and I are heading to a friends garage tonight and I plan on investigating this further and getting it set correctly but has anyone run across this before?
