Re: putting the tool into the pressure plate without a hydraulic press. I just received a new clutch kit in the mail yesterday and have been reading old threads about the job before I dive in. Here's what I found:
**When you pick up your resurfaced flywheel from the machine shop, bring the PP with you & have them do it for you.
**Do it with a floor jack: "Place the PP on a board or other flat surface on top of the jack pad or hydraulic press (I use a flywheel). Place the Saab tool inside the edge of the PP where the fingers are. Using the old throwout bearing, and something like a 2x4 or large socket, compress the pressure plate. With the press, this is obvious. With a jack, try to jack up the car (I usually use the rear center jack point). The weight of the car is well more than the PP needs to compress. Slip the tool in place, and you're done."
**"I usually stick the clutch under the car at the jack point. Then place an old slave on the pressure plate. Jack between the car and slave and it will press the fingers in before the car lifts. The farther you get the spacer and fingers compressed, the easier the install is. I have the real spacer ring and was able to change my clutch without removing the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder. You probably wouldn't get the clearance using a plug wire.
**"To install the wire in the new pressure plate I simply placed it on a drill press, protected the contact surface with a rag, fitted the old throwout bearing against the chuck of the drill and pulled down the arm. Worked like a charm. This is definitely the way to go if you have a drill press handy."
